The silkworm life cycle begins when tiny larvae hatch from eggs laid by the adult silk moth, then they eat mulberry leaves and grow steadily, molting several times. After about a month, they spin a protective cocoon from a single long silk thread. Inside the cocoon, they transform into pupae and eventually emerge as moths, but in sericulture, the cocoons are harvested before this final stage to obtain the silk.
